The Challenges of 13, 14, 15,....

I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?"
And I said, "Here am I; send me!"

Isaiah 6:8-9

In the early 1990s, my sister was a teenager, and I desperately wanted to be one, too. She got to wear make-up. She had a locker at school. And most importantly--she was learning how to drive a car. The ages of ten, eleven, and twelve dragged on for what seemed like centuries until I, too, could do all the "cool" things she did.

Then, when that beloved day arrived, and I finally turned thirteen, reality struck. Yes, I got make-up, a locker, and driving lessons. But what I did not anticipate were the peer pressure, competitiveness, and temptations that came with the teenage years.

As difficult as it was for a young person in the 1990s, I can only imagine the challenges that teenagers face in today's society. With stories of cyber-bullying becoming sadly frequent, and so much communication taking place over texting, Facebook, and Twitter, we remember that today's youth face challenges and distractions never encountered by past generations. But let us also remember the stories of young people in the Scriptures.

Joseph was a teenager when his brothers sold him into slavery.
David was a teenager when he was anointed king of Israel.
Josiah was a teenager when he ruled over Judah.
Mary was a teenager when the angel, Gabriel, visited her with a strange, awesome message.

Throughout Scripture, we encounter God's calling of young people, and God continues to call teenagers. Al Denson is a Christian songwriter and youth leader who wrote a powerful song whose message is the same for teenagers of the Old Testament, the 80s, the 90s and today:

Will you be the one to answer to his call?
Will you stand when those around you fall?
Will you be the one to take his light into a darkened world?
There are battles we must fight from day to day
But the Lord provides the power
For me to stand and say, "Yes I'll be the one...."

Take time today to pray specifically for the teenagers in your life. Pray that they would hear God's call. Pray that they would respond by answering God's call. Pray that they might look to Jesus, and not the world, for their true worth. Pray for them. Be the one, so that each of them might be the one.

grace to each of you,
Pastor Darian
